Overview
INTRODUCTION
My Local Stats, Malaysia, 2023 is a comprehensive economic and social statistics publication which covers 20 areas namely basic information; population; housing; employment; household income and expenditure; education; health; welfare services; public safety; tourism, transportation and recreation; internet and social media; basic amenities; gross domestic product; consumer price index; export and import; agriculture; mining and quarrying; manufacturing; construction; and services.
HOUSING
The stock of existing residential units in 2023 recorded an increase of 2.0 per cent from 6.08 million units (2022) to 6.20 million units. Terrace houses recorded the highest percentage at 41.3 per cent. This is followed by condominiums/ apartments (17.2%) and low-cost houses (11.2%). All types of residential recorded an increase and cluster houses recorded the highest increase at 10.2 per cent to 53,548 units as compared to 48,585 units in the previous year. This is followed by townhouses (5.7%) and condominiums/apartments (3.0%).

The national average house price recorded in 2023 was RM471,020. The highest average house price was semi-detached house (RM710,590), followed by detached house (RM642,429), terraced house (RM451,472) and high-rise unit (RM371,258). Malaysian House Price Index (MHPI) in 2023 is stood at 218.3 points with an annual growth of 4.1 per cent. All types of residential units recorded a growth for MHPI in the range of 2.3 to 4.6 per cent.

EDUCATION
The number of government and government-aided schools recorded
in 2023 were 10,231 schools consisting of 7,779 primary schools and 2,452 secondary schools.
The number of primary and secondary school teachers in 2023 recorded a decrease
of 1.1 per cent and 1.4 per cent respectively to 232,693 teachers and 178,619 teachers. On the other
hand, pupils in primary, secondary and post-secondary levels, increased 0.3 per
cent, 0.1 per cent and 6.4 per cent respectively to 2,779,131 pupils, 1,986,513 pupils and 71,073
pupils.

Overall, the number of students in higher education institutions in 2023 increased 3.6 per cent to 1,271,499 students as compared to 1,227,083 students in 2022. This increase was contributed by students at community colleges, private higher education institutions and polytechnics which increased by 9.0 per cent, 8.8 per cent and 2.2 per cent respectively in 2023. Meanwhile, the number of students at institute of teacher education and public universities recorded a decrease of 5.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively in 2023.

HEALTH
Overall, the number of government
and private medical personnel increased in 2023. The number of doctors
increased by 3.5 per cent in 2023 to 82,227 persons as compared to 79,443 persons in the previous year. The number of registered dental
practitioners also recorded an increase at 6.1 per cent to 14,255 persons in
the same period. In contrast, nurses recorded a decrease of 1.1 per cent in
2023. There were 161 government hospitals in Malaysia in 2023 consisting of 138
hospitals under the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH), 11 special medical
institutions and 12 non-MOH hospitals. The number of government clinics in 2023
were 3,114 including 1,175 health clinics, 1,716 rural clinics and 223
community clinics, Health clinics include maternal and child health clinics.

The ratio doctor-to-population in Malaysia improved in 2023 which is one doctor to 406 population (1:406) as compared to 2022 (1:412) and has reached the target ratio of 1:425 as stated in the KKM Strategic Plan 2021-2025. Seven states have reached the target ratio namely Kelantan (1:400), Perak (1:394), Pulau Pinang (1:386), Melaka (1:368), Negeri Sembilan (1:339), W.P. Kuala Lumpur (1:200) and W.P. Putrajaya (1:64).

TOURISM, TRANSPORTATION
AND RECREATION
Domestic tourists in 2023 recorded a 22.3 per cent increase from 65.1 million (2022) to 79.6 million tourists. Sabah recorded the highest increase for the state visited in 2023 which was 51.1 per cent to 5.8 million from 3.8 million in 2022. This was followed by W.P. Labuan (47.0%), Johor (42.7%) and W.P. Kuala Lumpur (39.0%). Johor recorded the highest contribution percentage of state visited in 2023 which was 11.2 per cent followed by Pahang (10.7%) and Selangor (10.6%).

New registrations of motor vehicles recorded by the Road Transport Department in 2023 showed an increase of 0.7 per cent to 1.53 million vehicles as compared to 1.52 million in 2022. All vehicles recorded a decrease except public transport and motorcar recorded an increase in new registrations of 67.5 per cent and 11.8 per cent respectively in 2023.
